Photoshop – Simple Sleek Widget Box

This is a tutorial on how to make a simple sleek widget/column box to be put in your very own website.

  1. First make a new document with any size, I am using 500x500px in here. Then create a rectangle with white(#ffffff) fill as shown on the image, name the layer - box-border-top

  2. Next, ctrl+click on the box-border-top on the thumbnail to select the region of it, then go to select > modify > contract give it a 1px contract. With the marquee selection still on, create a new layer fill the selection with black(#000000) and you will get something like shown on the image. Name this layer - box-bg

  3. Then, duplicate a layer of box-border-top and name that duplicated layer - box-border-bottom. By now you will have your thumbnail look as something like on shown on the image.

  4. With the round marquee tool, draw an oval marquee as shown beside. Hide the layer box-border-bottom.

  5. Now with the selection is still active, go to Select > Feather (Ctrl+Alt+D), give it 30px of feather. Press "delete" twice, tweak a bit on the opacity for now set it to 40% - 50% and you will get something like the image.

  6. Repeat the same step for the layer box-border-bottom, but this time the opacity will be even lower, around 10% - 20%.

  7. Create a new layer, use the rounded rectangle tool and draw a horizontal rectangle with white (#fffff) fill, name this layer title box, put in a text there as your title with your desire font, in here I am using Verdana Bold.

  8. Open the blending option for the layer title box, enable the inner shadow, opacity: 60%, angle: 120°, distance: 2px, choke: 0%, size: 3px

  9. Now ctrl+click on layer box-bg to have a marquee selection on it, create a new layer and fill it with white (#fffff). Name this layer - shine

  10. Now your thumbnail would look something like this

  11. Use the round marquee tool and draw an oval marquee like how is shown on the image.

  12. With the marquee in active state, cut the selected area with Delete button. Tweak the opacity of it to around 10% - 20%.

  13. Again with the rounded marquee tool, draw a selection similar to as shown on image.

  14. With the marquee in active, open the feather menu, Select > Feather (Ctrl+Alt+D), around 40px. Delete the selection area and there you go! You are done with the header part. Group these few layers together for easier job later.

  15. Now create a new layer on top of this Group, draw a vertical rectangle with white (#ffffff) fill, name this layer - content-box

  16. Create another layer and use the line tool - 1px, draw a vertical and also a horizontal line along the right and bottom side of the rectangle, like what is shown in the image

  17. Name the lined layer as - content-box-bevel

  18. Open the blending option dialogue box for the content-box layer, enable the inner shadow, opacity: 67%, angle: 120°, distance: 1px, choke: 0%, size: 5px

  19. Hola! now you already have the widget box almost done! Just add some text inside the content box to see the results

  20. The end results

  21. With a bit of color tweaking with the blending option on box-bg layer, and also some minor tweaking on opacity, you can have several version with different colors
