Why Online Shopping in Malaysia Won’t Work?

This is a true story happened on my colleague last week. Some of you guys should know there’s this Toy of Elmo from Sesame Street name TMX(Tickle Me Extreme) – Elmo.

TMX – Elmo

It’s a toy where when you press/tickle on a certain place on his body, he will laugh nonstop rolling around the floor, 2nd tickle he will laugh even worst and 3rd tickle he will be laughing like mad and rolling and hitting the floor, is a kind of cool toy. Cool toy usually the price is cool as well. So my this colleague wanted to buy this toy for his sister, he was told by his friend that Parkson has this selling online! So he quickly went to their website Parkson Online and check it out!

So he saw this Elmo published on the very first page of the website

He was overjoyed to see it, so he click on it to find out whether it is still available or not

It appears that he was able to add that item to his shopping cart and able to proceed on checking the item out

Now the credit card payment part, everything was keyed in and payment was accepted as shown on the screen

Plus with the confirmation email sent to him saying that the payment was successful.

So now as everything has done, he waited for the time pass and will pick that item up after office hour. However, something just tells him that something is not right, so he called the customer service of Parkson Online to confirm the order.

My colleague asked the person who were on the line about his online purchase. That fella told him that “Ohh, all these online purchase stuffs were actually handled by 1 person, and that person was already absent for few days including today.”….so, WTF? so if that person is not back then those who purchased online won’t be able to get their ordered item forever lah?!? Of course my colleague was so damn pissed and told her the same thing. So that fella said that she will ask her manager to call her back in 10 minutes.

30 minutes had passed and no call from him. Another 15 minutes more than only the manager called back (talk about punctual). Anyway, my colleague told that manager what had happened and he told my colleague “The payment process will normally take few days to process because we are using Maybank, so we haven’t get the payment from you”. Now that even pissed my colleague because FYI, we are doing online payment stuff and my colleague is the one who is handling all the backend coding for these online payment thing, he knows that these type of payment usually is instantly done! So everything was just bullshit from this manager. My colleague told this whole thing to the manager with of course unhappy tone (who will still be talking in polite way anyway). After that, the manager found out that my colleague is not a stupid person, he told my colleague “Errm, u hold on please, i will go check on the stock and get you back later”, so hung up and he called back in a few minutes and told my colleague this “Sorry sir, the item which you purchased was currently out of stock.” My colleague now super shit pissed and questioned him on how to settle this now. They had this item sold online and somemore is on the first page, payment was already made, then he made up all those ridiculous bullshit to my colleague, and now he said there weren’t any stock left. The manager did not give out any proper solution to my colleague, so my colleague had no choice but to ask him to refund the money to him, he told my colleague that “The refund process will taking 2 – 3 months.” lolz, this is damn stupid! So my colleague insist on either getting the item within these few days or refund him back the money fast! So he said he will try and sort it out.

Few days later, my colleague recieved this email

It said that the credit card payment was not succesful, which was obviously another bullshit story! Until now my friend still not yet recieve his payment back from Parkson Online, and guess what? If you go to their website now, this particular item which was actually not available anymore is still on the first page and somemore is the first item! Dumbass~~~~

So tell me, with these kind of online business attitude, will shopping online be a success in Malaysia? I doubt….

I have many experiences buying online stuffs but not from a malaysian company. My wife tried once with padini.com and she ended up having to pick up the items herself at the warehouse… now with this, i don’t even want to give it a try…

boon said during October 25th, 2007 at 10:18 am

ya man, really a bad experience here in malaysia with online shopping, they doesn’t even maintain properly and have faith on it themselves…how to work..

Not all is bad! When I went abroad for studies I ordered goods from http://www.orient-shopping.com with no problem. Even did custom order and they helped me out with a quote. I decided to buy and payed online, a week later a box arrived with all the order stuffs. The whole thing seemed very professional to me… follow up emails with kind replies, fast shipping, and so on. They even bothered to print labels with address, so no sloppy handwriting, reducing risk of the box getting lost. I also ordered something in a glass jar which they protected with ample bubblewrap… if not serious, for sure they could have just thrown in goods in any second hand box and ship like that… or even worse, not bother to ship at all. I have to say that ‘service’ and especially ‘customer service’ seem to be near non-existing in Malaysia. People to stupid, to lazy, many times only out to cheat you … HOWEVER … there are still people out there who care about the customer, you just need to know where to look. I can recommend orient-shopping.com for foodstuffs if you want online shopping in Malaysia, I even listed it as website with this post 😉

That’s why msian don’t like to shop online bcos the service damn suck ok not all of them but 90% are like that. They don’t hv proper e-commerce mgmt system, don’t hv capable staff look after the system just build the web online and start selling. Not even hv proper inventory system interconnect between their in house database with the e-commerce. Most worst is their customer service always get this answers/excuses, “not sure” “the person in charge not in” “I’ll call you back” “system down can’t track your order” and blah blah….

This post is about 2 years old – has anything improved? I’ve in Aust and am thinking of getting a gift online to be posted to my bro in KL. I’m hesitant ordering online now that I’ve read this post. If anything goes wrong, it would be such a lot of hassle to be calling long distance…
