Photoshop - Decay Text Effect

This photoshop tutorial will teach on how to create an effect of decayed text with simple but effective way.
Create a new document of white background with any dimension, my case i am using 500 x 500 px. Type in your text and choose type of font which preferably wide on its width, here i am using Impact.
Then Rasterize the font by right clicking on the Text Layer and select Rasterize Type
Next, find a picture which has multiple objects in it or with complicated object texture. For me on this tutorial, i simply grab a picture of a grass field as shown above. Open it in photoshop of course.
If your picture has more than 2 colors, desaturate your picture by going to Image > Adjustments > Desaturate or shortcut key Ctrl + Shift + U, this will turn the whole picture to black and white. In my case my picture only consist of black and green, so i remain as it is.
Using that picture, open up the Levels option by going to Image > Adjustments > Levels or the shortcut key Ctrl + L. Then adjust the settings to enhance the picture’s contrast. It’s ok if the picture’s color has gone burst, that’s our objective. In case you don’t know how to control the settings, just follow the number or pattern as shown on the above image
If you are not satisfied with the above result, you can always open up the Levels option again to adjust.
Now, use the wand tool (shortcut key W), using tolerance amount of 20 - 30, make sure the Contiguous is uncheck. Select any part of the the picture to get a region of interest.
While the selection is active, copy it’s content (Ctrl + C) and paste it on top of your text which you had created on step 1. This content will be on it’s own new layer. Name this layer decay
After that, Ctrl + Click on the thumbnail of the layer decay which was created on step 7 to make a marquee selection all over it.
Hide the decay layer, click once on the Text Layer to activate that layer, use the marquee tool (shortcut key M) and move the marquee selection around. *remember to use marquee too to move and not the arrow tool as it will cut the text straight away.
After you decide on which area that you want to decay the text, press Delete once. The result might not be as what you want to for the first try, but it’s trial and error kind a way to do it, so u can always undo it (shortcut key ctrl + alt + Z) and move around the region again and delete to see the result, repeat this until you can the desire result.
This is my end result. Please be noted that your result will surely be different from the above shown image, you can’t expect 2 things will decay the same way right? Anyway the effect will still be there.
By using the text created from the above steps, again you can make several designs on it as shown below. Happy photoshop-ing!
